This is a list of random crimes you can use to inspire your writing. Please don't use this list to inspire your latest real-life crime!

Ranging from serious crimes against other people to purely bizarre reasons to be locked up, there is something in this list for every (fictional) occasion.

Keep in mind this list does contain some disturbing themes. If you'd rather avoid the most disturbing crimes, I suggest you skip the "serious crimes" category.

  • Possession of banned books

  • Failure to attend church

  • Speaking ill of a dead monarch

  • Apostasy (abandoning one's religion)

  • Violating fasting during Lent

  • Eating foods reserved for royalty

  • Killing someone in a duel (you may have survived yourself, but your victory will be short lived!)
